Denver Names New Library After Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales

The Denver Library Commission voted unanimously Thursday morning to name the city’s new branch after late Chicano civil rights leader Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales.

Hundreds of Gonzales supporters sent in letters, emails, and attended meetings urging the commission to name the new library after the former champion boxer, poet and national civil rights leader.

In recent days, prominent officials, including the governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, wrote letters of support for Gonzales. However, there were also many who attempted to smear his name.

Denver Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz on Monday referred to Gonzales as a “terrorist.”

“What I want to say to the folks who don’t understand is that this is a shining example of what a community can do when they unite,” said Denver Councilwoman Judy Montero.

“We stand here very shocked and pleased,” Corky Gonzales’ daughter, Nita Gonzales, told the commission.
