Ulama: Mexico’s Original Ball Game

Football (soccer) is, of course, the favorite sport of most Mexicans, but let us not forget about our own traditional games and sports.

One of Mexico’s best known traditional sports is ulama, a modern variation of ullamaliztli — the ball game once played by Indigenous peoples from what is today the US state of Arizona to the present day country of Nicaragua.

Ulama is proudly still being played in the Mexican state of Sinaloa and other regions of Mexico. It also holds the distinction of being both the oldest known rubber ball game and the oldest continuously played sport in the world. Yes, the world!
